Integrating Art Therapy Media and Practices With Play Therapy (May 2012)

Art  Therapy and Play Therapy share many commonalities. Both are action oriented.  Both engage clients physically with “the real” as a means of self expression and communication through metaphor. These approaches stimulate the imagination and contribute to mastery of developmental tasks and to emotional growth. In this workshop the theoretical foundations of art therapy will be introduced.  Art making, art examples and discussion will provide participants with an understanding of how art therapists look and learn
from clients’ art. Ways that participants currently integrate art media and processes with play therapy will be shared among participants and further possibilities will be explored.

With Christine Turner, department chair of the Art Therapy department at Marylhurst University.
